Sri Lanka’s most scenic railway Journey from Colombo fort to Badulla, through the lens of GIS

Recently, I went on a memorable train journey from Colombo Fort to Badulla. Being a huge lover of maps as well as geography, I was captivated by the changing terrain and decided to create maps to share this incredible experience.

Elevation Change Map

The journey begins at sea level in Colombo. As the train chugs along, the elevation steadily rises, revealing the diverse landscapes of Sri Lanka. The highest point near Pattipola stands over 1,800 meters before gently descending into the valley of Badulla at 600 meters. This map visualizes these elevation changes, capturing the essence of the journey from the coastal plains to the lush hill country.

Ambewela to Haputale

One of the highlights of the trip was the stretch from Ambewela to Haputale. This part of the journey takes you through rolling hills and mist-covered landscapes. The train passes the highest railway summit of Sri Lanka near Pattipola and travels through the Horton Plains Sanctuary.

Talawakelle to Radella

Another charming segment was from Talawakelle to Radella. The train winds its way along the edge of the Great Western Mountain, offering spectacular views of tea plantations and dramatic slopes.
